Meet the driver-guide at the cruise facility and depart to Carrara to visit the largest marble quarries in the world.
The ancient Romans started 2000 years ago, later, artists such as Michelangelo, Donatello, Bernini, Canova and many others, loved to use the Carrara marble for their works of art. Today quarrymen challenge every day “Mother Nature” in order to excavate from these steep and abrupt slopes such a unique stone, white and shining, still renowned all over the world.
The tour starts with the visit of a working quarry where, in the bright of imposing marble walls, you will learn more about ancient and modern techniques used for the excavation and transportation of marble. You will see (in work days) quarrymen cutting a “bancata”of marble, moving huge blocks and upload them on trucks. Then visit the amazing, unbelievable tunnel quarry where marble is excavated underground right in the hearth of the mountain.
The tour proceeds with the visit of a workshop of sculpture bring you back to Michelangelo’s time. By looking at sculptors at work, you will know more of the techniques used the making of a statue, or better “to free from marble the figure still imprisoned inside the block”.
Afterward move for lunch in Lucca, such a charming town!
